Ngadjonji Technology

Shelter, Weapons, Tools

The Ngadjonji used the gifts of their environment as the raw materials for the production of a wide variety of objects which made their lives more secure and comfortable.

This photograph, taken by Atkinson in the 1890s, shows a group of rainforest Aborigines with some of these objects. The men on the left are holding shields, spears and woomeras while the man on the right has a huge wooden sword as well as a shield. In the front are two finely-woven cane baskets. Behind are three typical mija . (To see a higher resolution version of this photo click here )
